I was (once again) told what I believe on a fringe-right site. I decided to tell the Righties what I really believe; here's what I wrote:

"Stop telling me what I believe. My beliefs are not simple - life isn't simple.

You (I'm pretty sure) and I both believe, fundamentally, that the right of the individual comes first, all other things being equal. I'm guessing that you and I also agree that the individual does not have the right to, say, cry "fire" in a crowded theatre - even though we're quashing an individual's free speech in order to appease a group (gasp!).

I am constantly amazed (and annoyed) when the Right claims that the US has been hijacked by the Left over the past few decades. This is utter nonsense - the actual evidence indicates that we've moved far, far to the Right.

Consider the case of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States (1953-1961), Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II, and a Republican. Funny thing is, by today's standards, Ike would be a flaming liberal, to the Left of all recent serious contenders for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

General Statistical Info

You can usually find what's needed by entering a good set of keywords in Google, although seem people seem to have more luck than others. Some good sources to look through include:

NationMaster.com: "a massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations."

Statistical Abstracts of the United States: fantastic distillation of statistics about the US. One of my great pleasures is to thumb through the paper copy, looking for interesting tables.

Introduction (How I Learned To Be A Liberal)

Early in life I held conservative political views. To my mind, conservative views just made more sense. "Of course", I thought, "the death penalty will deter crime - who would chance getting executed? And welfare must encourage people to stay home and loaf. And of course free-market health care reduces costs and increases quality - it just makes more sense".

Over the last ten years I've become a Liberal. My switch from a Conservative to a Liberal came to be because I started focusing on the results produced by these political philosophies - rather than trying to guess which policies might work better, I started looking at which policies do work better. And, from what I can see, Liberal policies work better.
